Instead of recommending a rough opening size we give guidelines that will accommodate standard sizes of trim kits.

The trick to pocket doors is trimming the jam on the top and pocket side. Many trim designs begin with door casing. One each room side of the pocket side of the frame there is a piece of 1x material. The thickness is typically 1 2 inch but can range up to 3 4 inch thick for a more substantial casing or more detailed profile.

Pocket door frames are available with single and double doors. Using 2 4 studs frame a new rough opening to fit the dimensions for the door jamb indicated by the manufacturer of the pocket door kit. The most widely used door casing is 2 1 4 inches in width but can range up to 3 inches. Kit width is the nominal door width less 1 2 for standard stop and 1 less for inverted stop.

Installing a pocket door isn t very difficult but it does require some different trim details. Door casing and window trim are typically the same width and are interchangeable. Pocket door frames consist of both metal and wood components. Since the timely pocket trim kit is designed to replace this component there will be a conflict when using this type of frame.
